Robert, I was only *just reading* about this wonderful discovery over breakfast!
Did you know that it is also known as the "Lord God" bird? Apparently this is because early last century, the woodpecker was already so close to extinction that when one did appear, people were said to exclaim "Lord God, what is that bird".

BTW - I love the extreme vertical presentation and it was a delight to wait to discover the whole photo as it slowly revealed itself on to my PC screen.

Robert, wonderful capture! Just the other day I was reading the about the siting of the white billed woodpecker through the National Wild Life society. I'm a big bird watching fan and have many a pileated woodpecker around our area, so I appreciate your photo and of course the find of this species once again! Can you tell me what lense you used on your Nikon D70 and any other settings used for this shot? Thanks #1306613
