Description

Interesting bird - screams like a hawk when approaching feeders to scatter the other birds and have a quiet meal.

This one has a sense of humor - it snuck up behind a few unsuspecting birds and let out its hawk scream as loud as it could and scared the living daylights out of them!

This photo shows it bowed over, eating a seed it has between its claws.

Great shot Bill. I love to watch the ones around here. My feeder is way to small for them, so they spin it in order to knock out the seed. It's fun to watch... Here's my best shot of one. #1272493

Thank you, Tonya! We have squirrel-proof... no, make that squirrel RESISTANT feeders that work by closing the feed holes when something heavy perches on the trigger, but they defeat it by hanging from the tree by their rear feet and dangling down and grabbing the seeds! We also have grackles that are way too heavy and trigger the feeder trap, but they defeat it by jamming their beak into the hole and prying it open (lifting their own weight with their beak - impressive!) or by actually jumping up and hovering for a split second, sticking their beack in the hole and grabbing a seed before landing on the perch (and closing the holes) again. Ingenious!

I just love your photo, Bill. The colors are so harmonious-the bird so clear. Lorri #1272657

Thank you for the kind words, Lorri - a lot of it has to do with luck, and a lot of it depends on whether the bird feels like giving you a photo op or not. :)
