High Winds off Half Dome

Uploaded: March 22, 2005

Description

This is actually looking almost straight up at Half Dome. With the dark shadows in the foreground and the intensely brightly lit snow in the air, this was a difficult shot. In auto-mode the meter would compensate for the mostly dark areas and the highlights would be blown out - pure white - with no details. To make up for that close down the aperature a stop or two. Example - if the scene is calling for F8 @ 1/30 - either set the aperture at F16 or the shutter speed at 1/60. Your shadows will not darken too much, but it will darken the highlights just enough maintain the vibrancy and details.
