Mono Lake Sunset Dream

Uploaded: January 23, 2009

Description

Winter is a great time to catch sunsets at Mono Lake. In the Summer the sun heats the surrounding landscape causing strong winds that eliminate reflections of the limestone tufa towers.

In the Winter the lack of wind also allows particles in the air from wood stoves, automobiles and power plants to remain relatively close to the ground where it can contribute to the orange tones at sunset.

The lack of harmless alkali flies and the reduction in bird populations also make for more pristine reflections.

Make sure that you have very warm clothing including gloves and a hat, as temperatures and be in the single digits even before the sun sets.
