2/25/08, Tokiwa Park, Ube, Yamaguchi, Japan. Big lesson today! Up until now I've lacked confidence shooting action in anything but sports mode, but my new Canon 50D has forced me to meet new challenges. It goes to totally unacceptable ISO in automatic modes and the noise is horrendous. So, today I studied up on settings, and though I didn't go completely manual, operated from TV priority. In the advice I read, some said only 100 or 200 ISO, others suggested as high as 400. Well, I tried both 200 and 400 and also some sports mode. Only the images with 200 IS0 came out with reasonable noise levels. Used my 100-400L. Spot metering was also suggested, but don't think it worked well when shooting into a flock of swiftly flying birds--I like the eye to be dead sharp and the movement was too fast to get the eye every time. I'll try different focusing next time.
