Girl at Catholic Church
Uploaded: February 25, 2005
Shot at 1/15 @ f/16, 50mm lens, Kodak 400UC film, available light, at St. John Berchman's Cathedral in Shreveport, LA. I was looking for several things in this shot. I wanted to capture the lines of the floor and walls leading into the subject. I wanted to get the reflections of both the statue and the girl on the floor and to maintain the shadows above the statue and between the windows while capturing the soft glow of incandescent light combined with the natural light coming in through the stained glass windows. Luckily, I was able to do all of these things.

The lighting is really good in this photo. Do you recall how you lit the subject? Was it with just the church lights or flash, long exposure? I have serious trouble with lighting and any advice would be great. #1442176Kerry L. Walker June 07, 2005
It was shot strictly with available light. There were incandescent lights above, which gave the picture a faint golden glow, but there was enough daylight coming through the stained glass windows to cut down on the "incandescent orange" look. I shot it at 1/15 second at f/16. Didn't have a tripod with me so I had to brace myself and press the shutter very slowly. Shame on me for not having my tripod! I shot another of this pose with flash but I didn't like it as well. I lost most of the reflection when I did and the added light killed the mood of the photo. #1442213GoneFishing July 27, 2005
Very nice Kerry, I like the composition and the color of the dress makes the girl stand out and not blend in too much into the picture. #1644944JO ANN CLEVELAND June 27, 2006
