Description

I thought the best way to say THANK YOU to Jim Miotke and his Betterphoto staff was to share a technique that Colette Metcalf shared with me. If you want to see the entire write-up then get a February 2005 copy of Popular Photography & Imaging and read “Something’s Fisheye” by Debbie Grossman starting on page 48. You’ll have to experiment to find the right photo to apply the fisheye technique to but I found that ones with vertical lines and a bit of depth worked the best for me.

1) Do your normal post processing and then Image>Mode>8 bits/channel>Click.
2) Background square must be black behind the foreground white square.
3) Change marquee tool to elliptical shape (hover or right click for choices).
4) Place curser cross in upper left corner, hold shift and drag out a circle to size.
5) Place cursor in circle to get move icon and move circle selection to any spot.
6) Select>Inverse>Click.
7) Press Delete key.
8) Select>Inverse>Click.
9) Filter>Distort>Spherize (leave @ 100% & normal)>OK.
10) Image>Trim (default setting okay)>OK.
11) Image>Canvas Size>Percent>Width 150>OK.
12) Do your normal downsizing and sharpening before upload to BP.

My step-by-step is for a PC so you MAC users will need to make the appropriate changes to some of the key names I used. The author, Debbie Grossman, says this works in Photoshop 6 and above, Elements 2 and above and Paint Shop Pro. It’s a nice way to get that fisheye look without buying an expensive fisheye lens and having to carry yet another lens in a bag that is already too heavy.
