Hubcap
Uploaded: October 19, 2008
What better place to photograph an Audi hubcap than its native Germany? This one was on a sleek silver model parked right outside our hotel in Karlsruhe.
Audi was founded by August Horch, who was unable to call his business by his family name after his partners in a previous auto company sued him for trademark infringement. Since Horch means “hark” or “listen” in German, Horch’s son – who was studying Latin in a corner during a company meeting – suggested he use the name “Audi,” which is the Latin equivalent.
The four rings in the Audi logo represent the four companies that merged into the Auto-Union consortium of 1932: Audi, Horch, DKW, and Wanderer. Today, Audi is is an almost wholly owned subsidiary of Volkswagen.
