Hi Deb....really cute capture...I hope the Mom wasn't around...they don't like it when you get very close to their cubs. #6557107

Great animal capture and Ive often wondered how dangerous black bears are!Brett #6557796

Debbie S. Steinhausser October 06, 2008

Thanks, Brett. Black bears are definitely to be respected. I have had some safety training, but I would never go out alone to photograph them. They are different from shooting other species because you definitely don't want to sneak up on them. #6560627

This is certainly a cute and captivating animal. But, even more important yu skillfully photographed the animal for best impact.
The placement of the bear within the frame and the tight crop all create an image with impact. #6620319

Sigh, I do love this photo but I just want to point out that as photographers we need to be careful not to habituate bears to people. I live near Banff National Park and many a bear has lost its fear of people and unfortunately their lives because they of our actions toward them.. ever see a bear traffic jam... one bear in the ditch and 30 plus vehicles of tourists leaning out their windows, or worse outside their vehicles taking photos.... In Canada's National Parks (and I assume the USA too) it is very strongly discourage (think big fines$$) to approach a bear.

Love the photo, keep taking them, but stay away from those bear traffic jams and get yourself a really nice zoom lens.

Sorry for the rant, just want to make sure my kids get a chance to experience wildlife somewhere other then the zoo.

Gaylene, I appreciate your concern. This photo was taken at a sanctuary where, although the bears are wild, they are already somewhat habituated. They are not in anyway confined or fenced, in fact, if it is hunting season they are fair game if they leave the area of the sanctuary. They come in because food is provided for them. That shot was taken with a 400mm, so I was not close enough to make him or momma uncomfortable. #6622555

Awesome, sanctuary's are perfect for photograpgy... Both for the critters and the animals.

Now to just stop the road side traffic jams. I actually had a friend stop to "pee" behind a bush on the way back from Banff and she almost died when a bus of tourists unloaded with cameras to see why her car was stopped and what animal was in the ditch. Just glad it was her not me. #6622801
