Thanks for your comment Lidia. How long? - for more years than I care to remember!. About 30 to be precise. I suppose the best advice I can give is study the masters - Ansel Adams, Bill Brandt, Denis Thorpe, and a few more who's names I can't think of just now. Do your own processing and printing - after you've wasted hours printing mediocre junk like I used to do you'll start to think about the final image before you even press the shutter. You'll still produce mediocre junk (like I still often do!) but there will be less of it. And keep visiting BetterPhoto - it's a brilliant site! #1960Glenn Theal October 23, 2001
This is a wonderful photo.I agree. To often people don't realize how much effort and time goes into producing an image such as this. The percentages are extremely low, even for gifted and experienced photographers.
Too many amatures also fail to realize just how much effort they must actually put into their own work to achieve good results.
The words that I live by are "To get serious results, you need to put in serious effort."

This was the first image I saw of yours. My reaction? I want to see more. I am about your age, probably, and am trying to jump start my own black-and-white. My best has been BW. My landscapes don't come close to yours. What's your favorite film and developer combination? I've tried nothing special, just Tri_X and FP5 in D76 1:1. Yes, you're about my age! (me 53). To be honest this photo started out as a colour slide - the sepia image is a pure Photoshop creation. Actually, I think I used Paint Shop Pro for this - can't remember now (they say the short term memory goes first). I haven't done any film processing for ages and have just about given up on it. I'm going over to monochrome inkjet prints using the Lyson 'Quad Black' inksets. These replace the YMC inks with three shades of grey, which gives a very subtle tone gradiation - as good as a photo. The results are stunning. They also do a 'small gamut' inkset which has very subtle shades of colour, for toning and split-tone printing. I haven't tried this yet. See www.lyson.com for more info. When I was processing I used mostly Ilford FP4 with ID11 chemicals in medium format and occasionally Kodak Technical Pan processed in it's own brew (wonderful film, almost grain free but slow - 25 ASA). I never tried any fancy processing brews - keep it simple is my motto, there's enough things to go wrong as it is!
