Created in 1742, the famous grasshopper weather vane atop Boston’s Faneuil Hall is made of gilded copper and surveys the city with green glass eyes. It is said to be modeled a similar one on the Royal Exchange in London – founded by Sir Thomas Gresham, whose family crest included a grasshopper because his surname meant “grass cricket.” The Boston vane survived an earthquake in 1755, a fire in 1761, and a “grasshopper-napping” in the early 1970’s. It is the only original part of the Faneuil Hall – colonial Boston’s central market and town meeting hall – to survive.
