Sands of Time

Uploaded: January 10, 2003

Description

The Sand Sheet rests at the foot of the Dunefield at Great Sand Dunes National Monument in South Central Colorado. Westerly winds from the San Juan Mts. cross the valley and carry material to deposit at the foot of the Southern Sangre de Cristo Mts. Over approximately 3000 years sand dunes 750 feet tall form at the base of this natural barrier. The Sand Sheet is composed of larger particles that lay at the base of the Dunefield complex.

This previous submission shows the three distinct types of sand deposits here at Great Sand Dunes National Monument and Preserve. All are unsuitable for farming or housing. The sabkha supports some vegetation and is composed of sand grains cemented together by minerals. It extends over 120 square miles. Closer to the Dunefield is the sand sheet. It is 100% sand and very flat. Extending over 180 square miles, it contains several streams flowing from out of the mountains to the East, which are literally absorbed into the earth. The dunefield is 4.8 billion cubic meters of moving sand, constantly forming dunes up to a height of 750 feet. #18374

I love that you explain the how and when of your images Lem. But the image itself is great: lovely lines....you have a good eye!

Part of the fun of photography is seeing new places, or revisiting old ones. Sharing some details about the photos makes it even more enjoyable and informative. #40325
