what exactly they are, but they can be
rather pretty in their own way.

This is such a pretty capture of this flower - the details, lighting, colours, textures, point of view and composition here all are outstanding!! :o)

I think that this 'weed' you have photographed is most likely what is called the false dandelion...check out these two web pages:
