Underneath Minnehaha Falls in January

Uploaded: December 29, 2004

Description

You are looking at nine foot tall ice columns. This picture was taken last January when it was 30 below. I climbed 20 feet of rock and ice and was able to get behind the falls and take this photo just as the morning light was starting to shine through.

This shot goes well beyond the norm & captures the veiwers full attention immediately!! in spite of the effort it took to get there, it makes the viewer wish they could experience it for themselves (or appreciate the fact that now they don't have to)

a beautiful image to be sure - my highest accomodation. #1002605

yes, james, I am also a photographer. I submitted a picture to the december contest, but I can't find it. as soon as the calendar turned to Jan, all the december pics disappeared, & I can't figure out how to view the last few days (or Any of the dec entries, for that matter) I DO know that if you go to EOS D30 reviews, you can find my pic there. I will periodically enter more . . . #1016005

James, I enjoyed all your series on Minnehaha Falls. I was interested in your climb on the ice to get to the location behind the falls. Did you have all of the climbing tools ice pick, cleated shoes etc.? Great shot for all of the effort. Brad #6735144

James Reininger November 10, 2008 0

Hello Brad, thank you for the nice comments. However, I have to admit that I did not have an ice pick or cleated shoes. When I went to the falls that day I was simply planning on taking photos of the frozen falls from a bridge that is near by. As I was taking photos I noticed some teenagers playing hide and seek between the ice columns. That is when I decided to go up. I climbed the incline using my tripod for leverage. #6735301

Great shot, James. I used to pass by these falls on my way to work when I lived in Bloomington abck in the mid eighties.
I remember when we had torrential rains and floods one year, the water was shooting straight out ten to fifteen feet before it fell. (Didn't have a camera then) #7747217

James Reininger July 17, 2009 0

Thank you John for the nice comments. I wish I would have been there also. For the past few years, the falls have been dry alot of the time. #7750163
