Fantastic shot, Pam!!! Do the sandhill cranes spend the whole winter down there? I've seen them in Nebraska when they were migrating. #923945

Yep, Bosque del Apache is one of their overwintering sites. The refuge has huge cornfields that the slowly knock down over the course of the winter. The cranes and geese feed on the corn once it's on the ground. I think they prefer the knocked down corn stalks because they can see farther and don't have to worry so much about coyotes (which feed on both the cranes and the snow geese all winter).
