Donna,
I read a criticism of this photo which was wrong. The comment was that your horizon was not level. The only time you can be sure of the horizon is when you are lookjing at the region where the sky meets the surface of the earth such as on an ocean. When an island or shore line is in the way it may just mean that one part of the island or shoreline is closer (such as the left side of your photo) to the camera. The clue that your photo is aligned correctly is that the trees are vertical.
I have seen camera club judges make the same mistake. The horizon is the point where you are looking at the earths curvature not the point where something happens to touch water.

I think this is a really pretty photo and Bill is right although not all trees are exactly straight. I had the same problem with a picture in which many of the trees were at a slant. It really made the pic look off. But, actually the the majority of the trees were at a slant due to a hurricane. #481725

I don't think you need to crop at all. Not trying to be poetic but I see the ice and trees as a lifeless area that waits all winter for the warming of the sun to melt away the cold months and bring out new life. So much for “trying to not be poetic”, but pictures speak to me and that’s what I hear from yours.
