Flora-Florida #2 . . . Pickerelweed

Robert G. Stalnaker April 25, 2008

Thank you for visiting my gallery.

My series on “Flora-Florida” is being done for the pure joy of being out in nature and showing photos of the flora of the state of Florida. The photos in this series are not meant to compete with indoor shots and digitally altered shots, even if I enter them into the contest. Outside, the wind blows. Detail may not be as perfect as a rose petal shot indoors, nor will the lighting. The lens may not even be a macro, if I was out to shoot birds that day with my telephoto and stumbled upon some flora to shoot. If I am able to get some “great shots”, that is a bonus. The real purpose is to get me into the wild, where I enjoy shooting both flora and fauna, and showing others some flora from the state of Florida. I find that the simple natural beauty in the real natural world personally rewards me.

The green leaves can be eaten. The seeds can be roasted or eaten fresh. I saw a marsh rabbit using the pickerelweed to hide in while eating but was not able to get a good photo. Marsh hawks, red-shouldered hawks and barred owls--the rabbit’s predator--like the marshes and swamps where the marsh rabbit (the smaller version of the cottontail) hangs out, and pickerelweed helps hide this and other animals.

The butterfly looks to be a Papilio cresphontes. I can't tell what the bee-like critter on the right is.

This is a peaceful and pleasing photo. The color is intense and crisp and the variety of life in the capture is fascinating. #5922415
