I photographed these Black Skimmers in flight above the sands of Miami's South Beach as they headed-off to another location on the beach. For me, this photograph is about travel; experiencing freedom (to take wing) but also about void. Perhaps it's the purging of memories from past experiences for the new one's to come or a sudden realization of the arbitrariness in calling anything home; excitement and emptiness intertwined. I used Apple's iPhoto to convert to B&W. Enjoy!

Very enjoyable, Michael, both the image and the story with it. You should write a book, with your photos as illustrations. #5698907

Thank you Isabel, Dominick, Patrick, Tiia, and Eivor for you comments. For those who enjoyed the commentary I provided for this image I really appreciate your mentioning that as well. I enjoy writing as much as the photography I think and find this site a wonderful venue to express myself in that way as well. Eivor, I just may do that someday. Since I have been a member of this site I have, on occasion, gone to a wonderful local book store (Books & Books in Coral Gables) and have begun to study what photographers are doing in this regard. I have seen some wonderful books. I will continue to polish my skills and study this idea more. #5699896

I have to agree with the others.... the outstanding photo caught my eye, but your comments underneath are just as captivating! More, more, more!!!!! #5699963

This shot isn't an instant attention getter, but somehow I get lost in the "void" you speak of and enter a state of introspection. Creating images like this is a gift. And your words are deep and poetic. Thank you for sharing! #5700347

I have to disagree with Aimee about this shot being a attention getter, because to me it was! I love the birds in flight and the color! Brillant eye Michael! #5748158

Well Michael, personally I love the image and the description. Photography and writing, two of my passions, too bad I'm old and happily married ;0)

The image has a feel to that makes you want to stare at it for a while. Great work Michael, my friend. #5904230
