I Love this composition Brenda! Especially the use of light, the strong shadows, especially on the pumpkin. Did you photograph this scene with 90-degree or near 90-degree sidelighting? #167538

Excellent image Brenda! I love the lines - vertical, horizontal, and diagonal - and shadows ... great! I really love pumpkins, too. #767758

Thanks, Frank and Kathryn. Frank, the light was about 80 degrees to my left, which is why I got all those great shadows. I too love pumpkins - they say "AUTUMN" so well, don't they? The scene wouldn't be the same without it in this case - great light or not. #767924

Thanks, Janet - It was one of the moments where your knees weaken with excitement over the scene! #773750

Brenda, once again terrific photo!!

One simple question from an ameteur-one-day-hope-to-be-pro photographer.

Where did you take your meter reading from?

Thanks

TREMENDOUS shot, Brenda! An excellent find and capture! Love the stark geometry as much as your composition! The pumpkin creates a wonderful contrast with its shape and color! #795736

Thanks, Dan, it was a delight to find this. I do love those lines, shapes, and shadows!

Frank - sorry I missed your last question - I took a general meter reading (evaluative on the CANON system), and opened up 1/3 to 1/2 stop from there. In metering the image, the overall balance between light and dark seemed to be about equal, but with a little more weight to the lighter values, so I compensated to take that into consideration. To spot meter here, I would have taken a reading from the lighter area somewhere, and probably opened up about 1 stop. I wanted to keep it bright and cheerful! #795835

Hi Brenda!
I already expressed my love for this photo. I am almost half way through your new book "Creative Nature and Outdoor Photography", which beautifully illustrates, with this photo the importance of "working a scene", in this case coming in tighter on your subject.

Great Book! I like the message the book conveys that: once light, design elements, perspective, and composition become intuitive--You can then devote your efforts to creativity.
(There is a paragraph in your book expressing, more eloquently of course, the same idea)

I can only speak for myself as an ameteur photographer, that I try to be creative often, even though I have not yet mastered the prerequisite fundamentals, though I am making progress. #1009759
