Canadian F-18

Description

This Canadian F-18 photo was taken at our local airshow. It was approximatly 800 feet off the ground at the time, running just above stall speed so please don't critique the fuzziness.

Robert, actually I think the fuzziness is a part of the capture which makes the pic show motion. These photographs are very hard to do. Good job! #835511

Hi Robert- Thanks for sharing another shot! I appreciate the technical challenge here. My critique is that the photo doesn't say anything about speed or flight- it's just a picture of an F-18. What could you have done to share your **experience** of watching the plane? Were you impressed with the speed of ascent?- maybe you could have included some of the ground as foreground, and blured it to show speed. Just some ideas- Hope this helps! -Drew. #5373047

Robert- Again, if this is purely for a documentary photo, this is a wonderful example. And again, I can see a wall full of these. I grew up near Wright Patterson Air-force Base, I know these air shows well. I think if I were doing a wall full, I would make them all B&W so the different shades of sky would not be distracting.

I agree with Drew as far as the aesthetic need for some reference as to it's speed or closeness to the ground, etc. But.... I have been to many of these air shows over the years & this is often just not possible. They move so fast, that when they are close to the ground you would have to pan for a shot & the only really clear shots you can get of them are on the ground or pretty far off in the sky. So... with this in mind, I have to say you did a really good job of capturing the F-18.

I might take a little poetic license & add a little to the right of the plane, just enough that the nose points right to the right upper corner. It looks like it was a perfect, cloudless sky day, so as to view all their tricks & glamour!

As I remember them, it was aways mid-July & hotter than you can imagine, standing on the tarmac, watching the show! And so loud, it made your insides rumble! My father use to drag us off every year. He was so fascinated with them. The Blue Angels, the Snowbirds, etc. I was so happy when our son was old enough to go with him & I could stay home :) Thanks for sharing, it brought back fond memories :) #5385447

Sue & Jayme,

Thanks for your kinds words. I do concede Drew's point that having included some of the ground in the frame would have added to the speed/feel of the photo.

Fortunately or unfortunately, depending on how you look at it... I was standing on a ladder about 600 feet from its flight path (way closer than the typical crowd line). I didn't have all that long to zoom in vs. zoom out, so I had my attention primarily focused on keeping it in the frame, and not falling off of the ladder . As a result there was not any ground to show underneath it. It was a trade off.

Beautiful shot Rob. You know a friend told me I need clouds in the sky for my air show shot. I told them the day before there were clouds and I never got a shot. Bill #5916824
