Scorpion under Blacklight

Uploaded: September 15, 2002

This is a Giant Desert Hairy Scorpion from the Mojave Desert under a blacklight. All scorpions fluoresce, glow in the dark, under a blacklight.

Very cool shot Bob. The blue colors give it a very "horror flick" feel. Creepy! #9324

This is great! A biology lesson along with a great picture! I had no idea they glowed. #14941

Heather and Carolyn ... thanks for the comments. Once it was discovered that scorpions fluoresce, it became much easier to find them. We walk through the desert at night carrying a portable 15 watt (18 inch) blacklight and a small portable 12 volt battery. If they are out, they light right up. In fact, a Desert Hairy can be seen up to 50 feet away on a moonless night.
