Heather,
Thank you for taking the time to respond to this photo. It was my first honest attempt at studio settings and I'm glad you like it!

What equipment do you have (strobes, softboxes, umbrellas, etc.)? #4707610

Ethan,
I'm a self taught beginner, so forgive me if I don't use the proper technical terms. Mostly take outdoor photos and make due with what is available. I have a basic light set - 2 monolights with umbrellas. Also have a larger, thicker fabric umbrella that acts almost like a soft box.

Here was the set up for this photo:
about 5 ft in front of backdrop, I set up a card table with a rolled up bed pillow to prop the baby - all under the extended backdrop. I kneeled with the camera about 4 ft from the table. Kids are too fast for me to use a tripod - I like to frame/crop the photo in camera as I take the picture. To my left was the larger "softbox" umbrella at table height facing directly at a diagonal 3 ft from the table. Behind me on my right was a smaller umbrella monolight, table height, facing somewhat to the ceiling.
My husband was just out of camera range to keep our son safe from possible rolling. Is the shadow under the hat brim ok? Is there too much light?
Thanks, Emily

I'm no pro. I am also self-taught and fairly new to studio lighting.

The shadow under the hat isn't bad it's just hard. I'm thinking you may be able to diminish the shadow and soften it by moving the "fill" light (that's the one behind you on your right) back a few feet and directing it at the subject instead of up at the ceiling. This is just a guess of course.

It's a wonderful composition I like the simplicity of the white hat with no other clothing and the baby is very cute. #4712366

Ethan,
Thank you for your lighting advice. I will certainly try that. Lighting has been a difficult thing for me to work with and learn. I always thought I had a nice, big living room until I started setting everything up! Next week I have some friends bringing their babies over to practice on. I'll try your idea. It's fun to keep trying!
Thanks again,
