Such an unusual portrait, Sean! What's the story behind it? #137569

This picture was taken during Holi Pooja, which is a religious festival here in India. Basically everyone gets angry and drunk painting everything that moves. For the children, though, it is a fun time. I and my camera came back totally red after taking about two rolls that day. Thankfully everything cleaned up OK. #592540

Some clarifications on the festival:

1. It is NOT a true religious festival. But since most of the festivals in India have a religious flavor, Holi has it too. It is a 'Spring festival' (aka 'Basant Panchami') and is celebrated by people from all community.

2. People dont get 'ANGRY' during Holi. There is just NO connection between Holi and Anger.

3. Some people do get drunk, but it is NOT an aspect of Holi.

4. The festival is NOT called 'HOLI POOJA'. Is simply..Holi.

5. It is one of the few festivals(along with Diwali) which is celebrated throughout India.

Bottom line is ..its a day when people of all age play with colors, eat good food (specially different kinds of sweet meat(candy)), enjoy and make merry in complete harmony. Well...mainly due to the presence of alcohol some untoward incidents do take place...but these are generally minor and ignored. There is a history behind the origin of Holi and a story behind it too.....

BTW....the photograph is indeed excellent.

thanks. #626735
