Esopus Meadows Lighthouse

Uploaded: July 16, 2007

Esopus Meadows Lighthouse in Port Ewen, NY on the Hudson River... taken on a cruise aboard the M/V Rip Van Winkle from Kingston, NY on Friday, July 13, 2007. The base of the lighthouse is crumbling and in desparate need of repair...donations and volunteers are needed!

Built: 1872 ~ Automated: 1965 ~ Decommissioned: 1965

This light sits along the west side of the Hudson River marking the mud flats at Port Ewen. The octagonal tower sits atop a one and a half story keeper's dwelling. It has the distinction of being the only wooden lighthouse on the Hudson River. It has a wood frame and clapboard exterior. The light is no longer in use and the automated navigational aid is mounted on a pole outside the building.

Thanks April! It was so sad to see that the base had gotten so badly damaged and was in such need of repair. I hope they are able to raise the money they need to fox it up. It has so much history... ~Heather #4524716

Extraordinary photo of history overtoned with a note of sadness about the apparent depreciation, that which foreshadows all that dwells upon the earth. It is a quaint little light house. Hopefully someone will gain a grant to repair the aging structure. Thank you for sharing this photo, which is nicely rendered. #4546538
