Hi guys. Thanks heaps.

I'm not really comfortable photographing other people's creations and art, as it's not my own work, but where I do capture sculptures, architecture etc, I'll always try to portray my own interpretation or thoughts.

Thanks again :) #4429409

This type of sculpture usually does not appeal to me. However, your shot makes me see it in a different way--an exciting way: Angle, lighting, framing. Excellent.
Your photo titles are superb! #4766636

Well, that's huge... thanks so very much BP! Firstly to the judge(s) and staff at BetterPhoto. Really appreciate you guys taking time to consider my image.

And to you all that have left fantastic comments, I'm grateful for you taking time to stop by and say such positive stuff...The images 'Conduct' was up against are quite incredible, so congratulations to everyone in the top 10, and even beyond.

Part of the reason I shoot is to record things that obviously appeal to me, some that take my breath away, some things may horrify too, but underlying all that, is that I may be capturing something you may never see again...

Not long after I captured this shot, I noticed the sculpture was never lit at night, the way it first captured my attention. Even then I had to remove graffiti in post processing and the scars that skateboarders have left, and even now, there's moves afoot in Australia to ban shooters taking photographs of public places (as this is)

Not only this, but when I shot this image a few years ago (at midnight) it was relatively safe to wander around at midnight shooting the magic that night brings...nowadays, just a few short years later, although I pack a relatively heavy, weapon-like D3x, it's nowhere near as safe to do this stuff...So perhaps yes, you may never see 'Conduct' in this light again...

Thanks again everybody who's commented, I really admire much of your own work, and thanks too to anybody who'll drop by during the day. #8763625

Congratulations! Your earlier post here struck a cord with me. I often see things I would like to photograph, but run the risk of getting arrested if you do. I understand no photography in a museum but there are some places that have become off limits because of the dangerous times we live in that you spoke of. I hesitate to go out shooting by myself for fear of being accosted. Sad. #8767942

Congratulations on your well deserved first place win, Graham! I've always liked your special interpretation of interesting subjects! #8782126

Graham J. Weiss July 23, 2010

Hi guys.

Many thanks :)

Charlotte, these are weird and whacky times...I'd prefer just plain whacky to be honest...It's funny, I just want to show my appreciation or interpretation of a subject or object that interests or inspires me, or you think...there'll be a block of apartments in this vista, or a drain, or a street, and it may never be the same. You tend to think, sure, visiting this exotic location may be a 'once in a lifetime experience' and you took pictures, not because you feared it won't be there next time, but because it was striking the time you visited, and you may not venture back...I used to love wandering around the city at night, it was often quiet, bit eerie perhaps, but you could become one with it, and it'd allow a uniqueness to the way you shot and captured it. It really is sad, I agree, and I'd love for one day my photography to become a vehicle that could somehow turn that all around...perhaps before were pressed to become mace or weapon packing photographer vigilantes!!

Dave, cheers! Thanks heaps.

Gerri, thank you so much, and it's always great to see you :) Continued best wishes and fortune with your own gorgeous work :) #8782523

Charlotte LaBarbera July 24, 2010

I've been told that wasp spray is better, more powerful and more far reaching than mace - and won't kill you if it falls into the hands of the criminal. Can't quite figure out how to handle that and the camera, and the camera bag and the tripod though.

The desire for your photography to become a vehicle to turn things around is certainly a desire worth pursuing.
