The Big Dipper, from the Pisgah Inn parking lot, Blue Ridge Parkway, NC

My father in law, who is an astronomy buff, got to speculating about the combination of the D50's ISO 1600 sensitivity and the high altitude and clear skies at the Pisgah Inn. I immediately grabbed the camera and some gloves and headed out to the parking lot to experiment.

This was taken by propping the camera up on the roof of my car with a wallet under the lens, using a lens cap for a manual shutter - when you haven't a remote nor a tripod, you improvise!
