Description

Strong lighting contrasts (bright vs. dark) can make for a tricky shot. To expose for this shot I zoomed in the mid-range of the sky (between the brightest and darkest)to get my exposure readings - then zoomed back to take the shot. If I exposed the image in the composition you see there the brightest part of the sunset would have been darker and the silhouetted mountain with the climbers would have been a dark gray. This is the practice I always use for complex lighting situations and it works everytime.
