SPHERE
Uploaded: June 17, 2002
This is not the moon, moon was obscured by clouds so I took this photo in the opposite direction trying to get a night shot of stars. And this Sphere showed up? any ideas of what caused this?

Any Idea's on what caused the Sphere? I had the flash turned off but the camera did strobe to meter the surroundings before taking the photo. My camera is a Canon Powershot G2 digital Camera. I used automatic light correction using ACDSEE to bring out the sphere otherwise it was too dark too see correctly. I took a second photo immediately after this one and I didn't have the same results. #6102Romen Vargas June 18, 2002
Hi Johnathan, did you use a long focal length to get this shot? Cause the light blob seems like a distant out of focus light but since you said you took a 2nd pic and it didn't have it makes me think twice (but then again it could be a beacon that flashes on and off??) #8890

Romen I picked a clear spot away from the clouds and if you look close you can see 2 or 3 stars in the picture. I don't see any clouds or anything on else my screen at least. It was mounted on a bogen 3021pro/3030 tripod and pointed as far up as it would go. There were very few lights in the area I was shooting. I barely noticed the sphere on the original photo (way too dark)and had to enhance the light levels to see what it was. My zoom was at 11X digital zoom if I remember correctly with the stock zoom lens 102mm max. I was also using the Automatic Night Scene mode. Which would lengthen the amount of time the shutter was open. I'm assuming that I must have picked up the strobe but not sure. It's a weird photo so I thought I would ask if anyone else had simular results or knew what caused it. #8894Johnathan R. Peal June 18, 2002
Roman, I'm not sure if the G2 can do Multiple Exposures or not since it's a digital camera. I'm still learning all of the features. I do know you can set the exposure length and more manually. #8896Romen Vargas June 19, 2002
Hi Johnathan,Johnathan R. Peal June 19, 2002
I don't mind that you took the time and effort to tweak the photo a bit. I think it's great. I do see exactly what you mean. It was cloudy but in the other direction. I tried to pick a clear spot with stars. We have been having a forest fire in the area so I wonder if it was picking the smoke up in the upper atmosphere. I have no idea what all the sphere's are though. It's really, really weird. Especially since more are showing up. #8931Johnathan R. Peal June 19, 2002
I wonder if the forest fire is causing this phenomina? #8933Romen Vargas June 21, 2002
Hi Johnathan,Johnathan R. Peal June 22, 2002
Thanks for your helping me with the photo. You found things I didn't know was there. I don't think we will ever know what the sphears are though. The Canon G2 is a great digicam 4.0 mp. It has really good stock optics. I just got it a few months ago and have been really impressed by it.Thanks again. #9013
