Description

More detail of the The Sydney Opera House with a roof evocative of a ship at full sail .

In the late 1950s the New South Wales (NSW) Government established an appeal fund to finance the construction of the Sydney Opera House, and conducted a competition for its design. Jorn Utzon's design was chosen. The irony was that his design was, arguably, beyond the capabilities of engineering of the time. Utzon spent a couple of years reworking the design and it was 1961 before he had solved the problem of how to build the distinguishing feature - the 'sails' of the roof.

It's going to be impossible to choose which of your Opera House photos is a new favorite of mine, Donna. Such wonderful graphics!
Thanks for the "history" lesson. California's definitely figured out how to build those flowing roofs, etc. Someone is trying to sell a beachside home (for $75 million...) --- none of its walls has corners; everything curves. It's nicknamed the "Wave House". Wonder why... #3592361

Paul E. Earl November 16, 2006

I think this is my favourite. I am sure we will see one of these again soon.
Did you know the design was inspired but an orange cut into quarters? Did you do the tour? It is worth it if you have the time.
Hope you didn't get too much damage from the storms yesterday. We had snow this morning and at one stage I think the temp climbed to about 3 degrees. Goy alot warmer this afternoon but they are predicting frosts for tomorrow. Hope my garden survives it.
