Wow! I am really enjoying your gallery John. This photo speaks to me. I used to wear a ring on every finger in high school. (late 70's). I am not sure why but I think it was because every one of them had a story to tell. I'd love to her this womans story. I bet most of hers are right here on her hands and wrists! -Laura Swan #904189

Hi Laura,
For me the interesting thing about this shot is how her hands look. I think there is a lot of pain behind the jewels. I should point out that she wears a lot of jewelry in other places. She is a very interesting woman, with a lot of stories.
Thanks, John Siskin

Wow. Pain. Heavy. I hadn't zeroed in on that. That speak out on many levels. -Laura #5810933

She is much younger than I imagined her to be. What country is she in? #5812074

Hi Laura,
Is Los Angeles a country? She is a pharmacist. Thanks, John Siskin #5812094

Oh, aren't you clever?

Some think it might become an island some day...but that's as close as it will get I suppose! Ha! #5812471

Take a peek. I guess it's an ok site. Just not as inviting as yours. :)

Hi Laura,
It is hard work to create a site. Building mine required great patience. I am still adding to it, put in more architectural images two days ago. I will be adding another article next month, as soon as it is out of print. You can buy it at borders or Barnes & Noble, the Mar/Apr issue of Photo Techniques. Your friend creates some beautiful spaces. His website is much quicker than mine, which is very nice!
Thanks, John Siskin

Oh, wow John! You've captured so much character, history, personality and depth in this wonderfully presented detail portrait. The subdued tonal quality plays a great supporting roll to the amazing details in the lavish jewelry, her aged and weathered hands. Your choice of composition, with full frame and partial view emphasizes that this is just a "glimpse" of an interesting and unique soul. Truly inspirational work :) I'm with Laura ... what stories she could tell? #5913554

Hi Crystal,
She is a really interesting, and amusing person. I am sure she has experiences that most pharmacists do not have. I really enjoyed making this image. I worked with my Speed Graphic 4X5, which makes such great negatives. I believe I used a 210 Fujinon when I made the image. One Norman light diffused through a light panel. Creating in the studio gives you a wonderful opportunity to control your images. Thanks so much for your interest! John Siskin

Is the 210 Fujinon a large format lens? I very much appreciate that you include the technical equipment information :) Since I'm considering purchasing studio lighting ... and now I see you teach such a course here at BP ... I'm doing the math. *chuckle* Thank you again John, hope to get the opportunity to learn more from you. #5914341

John H. Siskin May 12, 2008

Hi Crystal,
Yes the 210 is a large format lens, roughly equivalent to an 80mm lens on a full frame 35mm camera. I have done traditional, wet darkroom, prints of this image, they are very satisfying. I do teach lighting classes here at BP, thanks for noticing. I have to say that lighting is the most useful skill a photographer can learn if he/she want to communicate with images.
Thanks, John #5914360
