Description

This was a real exposure challenge, with the bright sky, white snow-capped peaks, deep shadows on the mountainside and fairly dark water. I tried a number of different ways of dealing with it - this is essentially exposed for the peaks and the sky, but the water is a bit too dark.

Fantastic! You really captured the essense of the south island. Great use of the contrast between the snow and the jungle. #89527

Good shot, Jean. Exposure is excellent for this scene. #341857

Thanks for all the positive comments - it's nice to know the shot has made an impact. I think I did a fairly good job of exposure given the limitations, but I do think it is a bit dark in the lower part.

Jean: I tend to disagree with you on the lower part of this photo. The part of the photo that has the most impact is the upper 2/3 of the composition. The clouds that are settled in against the mountain are the subject here and since it is the lightest part of the photo, it draws the eye -- which is exactly what you may have wanted. If the water had been lighter, the cloud's reflection would have been brighter, and would have competed for the viewer's attention. To me, this composition and EXPOSURE is the right one!

One note: when you enter photos in the contest, do not point out the things you do not like (these comments are best talked about in the classes only). Sometimes you don't like it, but others will. You remember the scene as you saw it and the photo may not be exactly as you saw it. We were not there, so the photo looks great to all of us. #342195

Thanks for the comments Pat. You're right - I shouldn't knock my own work if I'm entering it in a competition - I guess I was thinking of it more as a class submission with an added click. :) #352133
