It's got all the features that could possibly place it within the same family as the beetle. My guess is it would be possibly a soft-shelled beetle or a weevil. www.bugguide.net has a pretty extensive list of insects that may be able to help you. #513228Lynn Margason August 30, 2006
This is a good sharp picture of the creature. Initially, I thought, "cinch bug", but I googled and that's not it. Then I tried "stink bug" (that's what it reminded me of), but the head is different. I found a website called whatsthatbug.com, it is a good resource. But, the closest bug I saw there (and I didn't do an exhaustive search) is the Western Conifer Seed Bug (but the back legs look different). There is also a picture of a wheel bug from above that looks similar, but you'd know if it was a wheel bug from the side. Anyway, it was interesting hunting for it. Your image would be quite sufficient to submit to whatsthatbug.com for ID. #3245439Samuel Smith August 30, 2006
wow, thanks for helping.i did a search for hours.Ariel Lepor August 30, 2006
I think I've seen these bugs around in the trees around here. Nice shot of it. If I could just make a suggestion, I would place the spider lower in this picture and more to the right, maybe also getting a view from it's front.Ariel

Sam, try looking for a wheel bug on the whatsthatbug.com site. The "stegasaouras like crown" may be the wheel. #3249083Samuel Smith August 31, 2006
hey ariel,it's not a spider,six legs,not eight.i didn't post it as a photo for the rule of thirds or for composition.i have 6 or 7 photos of it.Lynn Margason September 01, 2006
Sure, Sam, if you want send me a shot of the creature taken from the side which shows his side view. That will tell me if it is a wheel bug. Thanks, Lynn #3253757Samuel Smith October 26, 2006
