What a powerful and dramatic shot, Jason, very well captured light and textures here! #323897Jason A. Thomas January 09, 2004
Megan, Susana and Carol,Thank you for the encouraging comments. Apparently Meteorogists call this a 'microburst'. It has something to do with temperature differentials between urban (concrete and asphalt) and rural (wheat farms) areas. The difference in surfance reflectance makes the air hotter in town. That's what I've heard anyway. The buildings in the foreground are agricultural structures, but the small white spot just before the cloud area is the 'Kibbie Dome', an indoor football stadium. So you can get a feel for the size of the cloud. It engulfed the town of Moscow, which had about 18,000 residents at the time. #324586
