Portrait of a hummingbird

Uploaded: July 07, 2001

Description

I was about a foot away from the bird in this photo. He just sat there and watched me while I took several pictures of him. I had the settings at 1/400 for shutter and 2.8 aperture.

Hi Bradley,
1) I don't like bird feeders. These photos would be more pleasing to _me_ if the feeder was not included. Be aware of other things in the background that could be distracting (houses, wires, etc.)
2) The lighting seems to be very harsh and frontal. This does not lead to a sense of depth. Instead of a nice countour of the bird's body, I see a two dimensional image.
You are definately on your way, keep at it :). #264

Thanks Kris. I'm trying to work on a makeshift lighting set up to use where these birds are. It seems that the lighting there always seems to harsh or not enough. It's been fun having the same subjects to photograph at least. I'm hoping to get a great technique down by the time these birds go south this fall. I have just discovered some local flowers that hummingbirds go nuts over. Next time I go out to take pictures, I'm going to make sure I have a vase full of these with me and set up the camera by it. That should be much better than the feeder hopefully. Anyone have any suggestions on a set up to get photos of these fast little critters? I have a population of about 100 right now that will go up some in mid to late August, then they will leave in September. #446
