this is really amazing-- I mistook it for the tunnels that create the labyrinth at Terezin/ Theresienstadt--you must go there. If you search the internet, you can find the design for the fortifications which include double walls and moating that could be flooded in case of enemy penetration. The moat lay between the first and second walls, and inside these all are tunnels exactly like this...

And prisoners were led around inside these tunnels to confuse them and psychologically intimidate and torture them before interrogation or with threats of execution...

I as in Terezin to clean up after the flood... have been there many times an in these tunnels. is very oppressive and intimidating experience because the labyrinth was created to trap the enemy within the walls so that the defending Austrians would be able to repel the assault

and the Nazis used them for other pruposes. #3003948

Tricia L. Olson-Giles July 09, 2006

Brilliant! For anyone who hasn't read it, I suggest it highly, even though it's painful emotionally, "Night" by Eli Wiesel, the Nobel Prize winner. It's his account of being in concentration camps as a young teenager. #3003973

Melissa G. Meiselman July 09, 2006

Thanks Mary and Tricia for your terrific comments....and yes, I have read, "Night" by Eli Wiesel!! #3004108

Mary K. Robison July 09, 2006

Your photos of the Holocaust Museum, including the tunnels, are such an emotional mixture of beauty and horror, Melissa.
I think every human being should visit a museum such as this, if they are unable to travel to some of the actual concentration camps. I saw Dachau in Germany when I was 21, and the memory of that day brings tears to my eyes as I write.
It astounds me when people (i.e., Neo-Nazis) claim the Holocaust is a hoax. Talk about denial!
I'm glad that you've shared these photos, Melissa. We all need to be jolted into this side of reality now and again.
