this is really amazing-- I mistook it for the tunnels that create the labyrinth at Terezin/ Theresienstadt--you must go there. If you search the internet, you can find the design for the fortifications which include double walls and moating that could be flooded in case of enemy penetration. The moat lay between the first and second walls, and inside these all are tunnels exactly like this...And prisoners were led around inside these tunnels to confuse them and psychologically intimidate and torture them before interrogation or with threats of execution...
I as in Terezin to clean up after the flood... have been there many times an in these tunnels. is very oppressive and intimidating experience because the labyrinth was created to trap the enemy within the walls so that the defending Austrians would be able to repel the assault
and the Nazis used them for other pruposes. #3003948

Brilliant! For anyone who hasn't read it, I suggest it highly, even though it's painful emotionally, "Night" by Eli Wiesel, the Nobel Prize winner. It's his account of being in concentration camps as a young teenager. #3003973Melissa G. Meiselman July 09, 2006
Thanks Mary and Tricia for your terrific comments....and yes, I have read, "Night" by Eli Wiesel!! #3004108Mary K. Robison July 09, 2006
