peek-a-roo

Description

(I put this one out on the Vault a while back, but really seems to fit this assignment). The whole emotion of this picture changed when I put the roo over to the right, and used him and the tree as an integrated subject.

I like this... You sure do have interesting subject matter... How close can you get to the buggers before the dash off? I'd love to get a chance to really zoom in on this fellow. #10158

Thanks, Damian -- actually, I happened to be sitting in my car eating a sandwich when this little guy peeked out at me. he was about 50 feet away. over the course of that day, I wandered down a poorly trafficked road at about 25 kph, and loads of roos were emerging for their evening feeding from under the spinifex bushes. I pulled to within 15-50 feet of several, and got some great shots. some are actually quite non-plussed about you getting that close, others are very skittish. (actually, and much to their misfortune, they appear to be more fearful of people on foot than of cars...) Set your camera on continuous mode, tho, and you get get some excellent jumping shots when they leap away. main thing is be slow and quiet. fyi, I got my best roo shots (including this one) in exmouth, western australia. lots and lots of the little guys there, on the western side of the peninsula. after 5:00 pm is best; otherwise they're in hiding under the bushes. #16455
