A US Marines F-35B STOVL (Short Take-Off Vertical / Landing) in hover (Mode 4)
** The power from the main engine (Pratt & Whitney turbofan) is transitioned to the Lift Fan (Rolls Royce) directing 40,000 pounds of thrust to push downward allowing the air vehicle to hover. (Max take-off weight is approx 60,000 pounds). Normally the main engine would use this thrust for forward flight including supersonic speeds.
