Description

Taken at the Devils Postpile National Monument in Mammoth, California. The monument's most notable feature is the formation, consisting of a wall, or cliff, of polygonal basaltic columns some 40 to 60 feet (12 to 18 metres) tall and 10 to 30 inches (25 to 75 cm) in diameter. It was created within the last 100,000 years by the cooling and cracking of hot lava.
