Description

Taken in backyard using a Canon 5DM4 camera with a Canon 600mm f4L IS ii with a Canon 1.4x iii telextender on a Gitzo tripod and Wemberley Gimbal head. The Flicker is attempting to get the suet out of some holes I drilled into this dead tree trunk that I planted for picture taking purposes.

I have had this setup for several years and I have obtained quite a few willing subjects. I located a 12 foot tree trunk, planted it about 4 feet in the ground, drilled a number of holes on both sides of the trunk so that the woodpeckers would present a side view to my camera. So as a result, I have a lot of cool photos of birds pecking the tree trunk and it all looks natural. Except, that the birds get suet all over their beaks. It is amazing how much spot removal is required. I tried putting napkins out for the birds but they just rip them up and used them for a nest. Ha. #11764727
