Description

One of the ornate rooms of the Library of Congress now houses a near-complete reassembly of Thomas Jefferson's original library. (He sold his 6,487 books to Congress in 1815, forming the core of the Library of Congress, after the British burned Washington and the original Congressional Library in 1814.) Some 2,000 books here are originals from Jefferson's sale; the rest on display are pulled from other collections in order to recreate most of the initial set -- as nearly two thirds of the originals burned in 1851.)

Thanks, Dayna! It is an amazing building of course, but this exhibit was particularly striking too, given the history here. #11740830
