Crissy Marsh

Birds hanging out on a sand bar in the marsh at Crissy Field in San Francisco. From 1896 to 1994, the area was used by the US Army, which considered the marsh suitable only for filling and dumping. The National Park Service took over the area in 1997, restoring the marsh and removing 90,000 tons of contaminated materials. Today, the marsh and adjacent beach are home to over 100 species of birds. For local and visiting humans, it is a beloved shared backyard.
