In 1766 Catherine the Great set up the Institute for Young Nobel Ladies at the Smolny Convent which was the first school for the daughters of Nobility. In 1917 the girls were dismissed and the building became the headquarters for the Petrograd Bolshevik Party. Lenin lived there for 124 days. Today the Smolny Cathedral is used as a musical concert hall.
