Description

From the Macon County Conservation District's website - a brief description of the Pine Tree Forest at the Rock Springs Nature Center:

"This five acre pine plantation contains red and white pines. The trees were planted in the early 1960s as part of a land program. 5,000 white pine and 5,000 red pine were planted.

Few plants grow under the pines due to the deep shade year round. The only evergreen tree native to Central Illinois is the eastern red cedar, which was used by some settlers as Christmas decorations."

Congrats! Lovely. What do you mean ..."as part of a land program...?" We have a similar pine forest by us here in NJ but strictly red pines were planted. They were installed by the Civilian Conservation Corps (a work program) in the early 30's. These forests were supposed to be maintained and thinned out to allow for new growth. Our's was not and therefore, the pines were a victim of their own success so to speak. The deep shade prevented new growth of seedlings, and mature trees died. Invasive plants grow when a hole in the canopy opens to allow sunlight in. Just thought I'd share that info... Love the shadows in your photo too. #11691325
