The Petitioners

Description

With the costumed Rose sisters in the foreground, I concocted a story that they had been to petition the Doge of Venice to take mercy on an incarcerated prisoner dear to them. Having failed to secure a release, they were now waiting nearby, so their beloved imprisoned could take one last view of them, before crossing the famous Bridge of Sighs in the background; that bridge forms a passage used to take the condemned from the Doge's Palace, to the Doge's prison.
