Description

Fort Hancock, a former US Army Fort, is in disrepair. A significant coastal artillery base it was operated in conjunction with the US Army's Sandy Hook Proving Ground between 1874 and 1919. In 1893, Fort Hancock installed the nation's first disappearing gun battery at Battery Potter. In the late 1950s anti-aircraft missiles from Project Nike were based at the fort. Fort Hancock was decommissioned as an active U.S. Army installation in 1974.

All of the homes along Officer's Row are in desparate shape. In fact, the National Park Service is soliciting proposals for renovation and use to the more than 35 buildings, including Officer's Row, in the fort complex.

After many visits to this site over the years, I finally got the image I wanted with my new Canon 10-16 mm ultrawide zoom lens set at 10 mm. Exposure: f/8, 1/640 sec, ISO 125.
