Castillo San Felipe del Morro
Known among the locals as El Morro, Castillo San Felipe is a 16th century fortress built with a defensive purpose: protecting the city of San Juan from any sea attacks. A part of the National Historic Site of San Juan nowadays and a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983, El Morro is one of Puerto Rico’s top tourist attractions, receiving about 2 million visitors on a yearly basis.
Construction of what we know nowadays as Castillo San Felipe del Morro started back in 1539 and lasted two centuries and a half, the fortress rising gradually from a two-storey edifice to the six levels one we can admire today. The 150 meters high building is nowadays home to an interesting collection of items coming from the colonial times.
El Morro proved its strategic importance several times along the history, but the most memorable moments were the victory over Sir Francis Drake’s fleet in 1595 and the resistance to the Dutch attack years after the first one.
