I had an close encounter with this beautiful giant sea turtle as I fell on a rock walking out to look at a tidepool. I never even saw him until after I fell. He was about 5 feet away. A local told me the turtle must have been my 'aumakua, because the turtles never let people get near them. An 'aumakua in Hawaiian culture is a guardian spirit, and often takes the form of an animal.
