Dumbarton Bridge

Description

One of the great old bridges that span Rock Creek and the parkway alongside it; here, Dumbarton Bridge from 1915. Rather than a typical, straight-line bridge, this one is crescent-shaped as it crosses the creek and roadway below. The sidewalks flanking the bridge's roadway are supported by small arches which rest on the diagonal brackets seen along the upper left. Those in turn end at decorative sculpted corbels based on a life mask of Sioux chief Kicking Bear. The large arch at the bottom right allows parkway traffic to pass beneath the bridge.

Exif: F Number: 11, Exposure Bias Value: 0.00, ExposureTime: 1/50 seconds, Flash: did not fire, compulsory flash mode, ISO: 400, White balance: Auto white balance, FocalLength: 275.00 mm, Model: Canon EOS 6D

Thank you, Joy! I've always wanted to get down to ground level at this bridge; you can't stop your car on the parkway, so I finally worked up the nerve to scramble down the steep hillside next to the bridge. #11270194

Great capture, they say that photography can be dangerous, make sure you always keep safe. I broke my ankle in three places last May trying to get the shot...never got the shot and still trying to recover. Glad you got it. #11279720

Thanks, Sylvia! This wasn't too bad. There was a steep hill to descend, to reach a broad flat area where I could get this shot, and some others.
I'm sorry to hear about your tumble and ankle! It is all too easy to get injured in what would seem like a "safe" past-time like photography! #11279932

NIce shot, Chris - it'll be fun to see this again from time to time as you reshoot it. #11285294
