Inside Russian Banya

Description

The banya tradition is quintessentially a Russian cultural experience. Similar to a sauna or bathhouse the key element is the steam room. In the foreground left are the heated rocks and instruments to move them. Water is poured onto them with long-handled ladle. Pine oil or eucalyptus may be added to the water to impart a sent. Following this you lightly beat yourself with a bundle of birch branches. "An experience that is cleansing, therapeutic and unforgettable". This capture of a 1800's Banya on Kizhi Island.
