Description

From a salt-and-pepper chess set I made 15 years ago. I rearranged the shakers for this shot to let me shoot diagonally into the board on point, while keeping the arrangement similar to their usual placement. Forming the outer row of shakers, near to far, is a Knight, the Queen (the only cut-glass and chrome-free piece), a Bishop, a Rook, the King and another Bishop at the very back. The line of Pawns of course forms the inner rows; after the Bishop shakers started this idea, the Pawns came 5 years later, when undertaking the project in earnest. The board itself was made by cutting self-stick linoleum floor tiles into 2" squares, then applying them to a 16" square piece of plywood, wrapped in blue contact paper and set on metal chair glides as little legs.
The whole set was created as a Christmas gift to give to a friend; upon completion, I couldn't give it up!
